Course Outline

This workshop draws its learning techniques from the Daily Painting Movement. The goal is to paint exactly what you see, not in a tight fashion but in an authentic and accurate way, seeing the correct value, colour and spatial relationships.  Fundamentals such as composition, drawing for painting, tonality, colour mixing, etc. will be covered. Students may work in oil, acrylic or soft pastel.

Course Material

Pigments: Cerelean or Thalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Transparent Red Iron Oxide, Cadmium Red Light, Yellow  Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Yellow Light and Titanium White (Note:  Gaye uses M. Graham oil paints, but any professional quality oil paint will be fine)

Medium:  Walnut Oil

Solvent: Gamsol (available at Opus.  Please bring this brand as people may be sensitive to the odor of other solvents)

Brushes: Gaye uses mostly flats and brights that are soft natural bristle such as mongoose. Natural bristle brushes are expensive, but bring at least one ½” natural bristle (soft) oil brush if you can. A range of sizes from ¼” to 1” plus a small round will do nicely.

For still life set ups:

  • gooseneck lamp with high watt bulb with clamp or clip
  • small glass objects (keep it simple), small bowls or plates
  • pieces of fruit or vegetables.
  • a small paring knife for cutting fruits and vegetables

Supports: Small size canvases or panels primed with gesso. Suggested sizes are 6X6” or 6X8”.

Miscellaneous: Baby wipes for cleaning hands and palettes, Cleaning tank (jar) for solvent, and a smaller one for medium, Blue shop towels

NOTE: If students are working in acrylics, please bring the same pigments as listed above as well as polymer medium for your paints. Also, bring brushes more appropriate for acrylics; whatever you are accustomed to working with will be fine.
